Per what he stated in his interview with Anne Thompson it does sound like this will in fact take place.  Fingers crossed it truly does, especially with the possible film shoot delay of "A Single Shot".

Here is a write-up on Brontë Blog - HERE regarding Michael's interview and Jane Eyre.

Very excited to hear about Michael's projects.  He works pretty fast, so unless A Single Shot is going to be postponed.

This isn't Jane Eyre related but it is Brontë related.  Interesting about Andrea Arnold taking Wuthering Heights on.  It will be even more interesting to see what she does with it.

Andrea Arnold Climbs Wuthering Heights - Tragic romance for Fish Tank's creator

Source: Variety - Andrea Arnold Climbs Wuthering Heights

The latest cinematic version of Emily Bronte's classic tome Wuthering Heights has had a hell of a time finding a Cathy or a director. But now it has one of them at least: Fish Tank's Andrea Arnold has signed to call the shots.

The team at Ecosse Films must be wiping their collective brows - and crossing their equally collective fingers that she sticks around longer than John Maybury and Peter Webber, who both flirted with the idea of the directing job, but ultimately vacated the chair.

And with Arnold in place, the movie might finally lock down a cast, since seemingly every suitable actress, including Natalie Portman, Abbie Cornish and Gemma Arteton have been attached to the role of doomed lover Cathy at one point or another.

Olivia Hetreed has adapted the novel, which sees a damaged romance play out between the moody Heathcliff and the passionate Cathy, even after she dies and haunts his life.

While it's an unexpected turn for her - she's only ever worked on her own scripts in the past, and nothing quite as high profile as one of England's most famous literary titles - the intense emotions and troubled characters of both sexes would seem to be a good fit.

Oh, and she loves the book too, apparently: "Andrea has previously said that the only book she would ever direct would be Wuthering Heights, because of the passionate, impossible love story at its center and its elements of class divide," producer Robert Bernstein gushed to Variety. "It's a very lucky coincidence for us that we've found each other."

I think they used to do it like that before, because I remember not being able to see Variety articles.  I don't know what made them change their mind to get rid of log ins.

Interesting about Andrea Arnold.  She's written all her movies she's done.  It will be interesting to see her do something she didn't write.

'Jane Eyre' adaptation attracts cast
Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins in negotiations
By Borys Kit

Feb 10, 2010, 05:54 PM ET
BERLIN -- Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins and Imogen Poots are in negotiations to join the cast of "Jane Eyre," an adaptation of the classic Charlotte Bronte novel.

Cary Fukunaga is directing for BBC Films and Focus Features, which is handling sales at EFM.

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender are at the center of the Gothic tale, which follows young governess Jane Eyre (Wasikowska), who falls in love with her employer, Edward Rochester (Fassbender), but discovers he harbors a dark secret.

Bell will play St. John, a clergyman who turns out to be Eyre's cousin. Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor, who disapproves of Eyre's engagement with Rochester.

Hawkins is Mrs. Reed, Eyre's aunt, who adopts her but abuses and neglects her until death.

Yaaaaaaay Judi Dench.  Love her  Cheesy

Fantastic that this project seems to be moving forward - I was harbouring fears that it would turn into another Wuthering Heights and go nowhere - this is awesome!

Director Cary Fukunaga on the 'Darker Sides' of His Upcoming Jane Eyre

Written by Kyle Buchanan | 10 Mar 2010, 6:40 AM

There’s not anything inherently fresh and vital about doing a remake, but Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming take on Jane Eyre may buck that trend. The 32-year-old director of the art house smash Sin Nombre is regarded as one of Hollywood’s most promising new talents, and he’s lined up two other up-and-comers to star in his adaptation of the Charlotte Brontë novel: Alice in Wonderland heroine Mia Wasikowska, and Michael Fassbender of Inglourious Basterds and Fish Tank. This weekend, Fukunaga spoke to Movieline about what he’s got planned for the film.

“I’d known there was a Jane Eyre script out there for a couple of years, and it was one of my favorite movies as a kid,” Fukunaga told me, referring to the 1944 Robert Stevenson-directed version. “When [Sin Nombre] came out in the UK, I took advantage of that to meet with the BBC, and it turned out that there was no director that was attached anymore and the script happened to be amazing.”

Is he daunted by remaking one of his favorite films? Not quite, Fukunaga said. “The Orson Welles-Joan Fontaine version was of an era. You wouldn’t make a film like that anymore. I’m a stickler for raw authenticity, so I’ve spent a lot of time rereading the book and trying to feel out what Charlotte Brontë was feeling when she was writing it. That sort of spookiness that plagues the entire story…there’s been something like 24 adaptations, and it’s very rare that you see those sorts of darker sides. They treat it like it’s just a period romance, and I think it’s much more than that.”

It’s also a very different kind of story from Sin Nombre, an illegal immigrant drama that Fukunaga filmed in Mexico with unknown actors. For a young director still establishing his visual sensibility, Fukunaga admitted that he’ll be expanding his repertoire quite a bit with Eyre.

“It’s a little more thought out,” he said. “On Sin Nombre, [cinematographer] Adriano Goldman and I improvised a lot of things on-site. We were working with untrained actors, and you can’t really block a scene in a traditional way. On this film, we’re working with such pros that can work and hit their mark, so we’re coming up with some interesting ways to shoot the film. It’s all about tension and creating that sense of horror underneath.”

Among those pros is a supporting cast that includes Dame Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, and Sally Hawkins. I asked Fukunaga how it feels to work with actors who aren’t merely trained, but among the most lauded in their field.

“It’s a treat and daunting to be directing someone like Judi Dench, who’s made more films than I’ll ever make in my lifetime.” He laughed. “We don’t start rehearsals until next week, so ask me again then and I can tell you with more authority.”

Jane Eyre begins shooting at the end of the month.

Michael Fassbender Finds his ‘Jane Eyre’

12 Mar 2010 |

Michael Fassbender
Production will commence shortly on the set of ‘Jane Eyre’. The new interpretation of the Charlotte Brontë novel from ‘Sin Nombre’ director Cary Fukunaga will see Irish actor Michael Fassbender take on the role of the ominous Mr. Rochester opposite Mia Wasikowska, Judi Dench and Jamie Bell.

Michael Fassbender, lauded with an IFTA for his portrayal of hunger striker Bobby Sands in ‘Hunger’, will take on a very different role in the shape of the portentous Mr Rochester who both terrifies and captivates his timorous new governess, Jane Eyre. As mentioned above Jane will be played by Mia Wasikowska who is currently appearing in Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as the title character. The other cast members involved with the project are Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal) as Mrs. Fairfax; Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as St. John Eyre Rivers and Sally Hawkins (Happy Ever Afters) as Mrs. Reed.

Cameras will start rolling on the film’s set on Monday, March 22nd and the shoot will last for eight weeks. The film will shoot on location in London and Derbyshire. The film is a co-production between BBC Films, Focus Features and Ruby Films and is expected to be released in early 2011.

‘Jane Eyre’ tells the story of the title character’s harsh upbringing as an orphan and eventual employment as governess in Mr Rochester’s household. Though afraid of her new employer Jane finds herself falling in love with him. When it seems that Jane can, for once, be happy it transpires that Mr. Rochester has kept a terrible secret from her.

Charlotte Brontë’s novel has been adapted for the big screen by Moira Buffini (The Enlightenment) and is produced by Alison Owen (Elizabeth) and Paul Trijbits (executive producer, The Wind that Shakes the Barley). The director of photography is Adriano Goldman (City of Men).

Michael Fassbender Excited By Rochester Role

Michael Fassbender has admitted that he is excited about taking on the role of Rochester is a new movie adaptation of Jane Eyre.

The Inglourious Basterds star is all set to appear alongside Alice In Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska in the Cary Joji Fukunaga directed movie.

In an interview with Empire Fassbender said: "I was close to doing Wuthering Heights a couple of years ago, And you don't get Heathcliff, Rochester has got to be second on the list.

"It's a great role, there are so many layers to him. He's been hurt, and there's cruelty to him which I look for ward to exploring.

"And Mia is such a great talent; she's going to be a big star."

Fassbender has really mixed and matched his roles over the last twelve months moving from the war movie Inglourious Basterds to Andrea Arnold British movie Fish Tank, which won rave reviews.

His first venture onto the big screen this year comes in the form of Centurion, which is directed by Neil Marshall, and follows the Ninth legion's battle with the Picts.

The actor is also set to team up with Josh Brolin and Megan Fox for Johan Hex.

Is that Rochester's wife?  No one knows yet.  It's been asked in a lot of places.
